What is Fathead Pizza?

  • Fathead pizza is a favorite on the keto diet plan and for good reason. With a texture that is similar to traditional pizza dough, it’s just as tasty, or maybe even better.
  • It really wins in the flavor department, too, with a cheesy crust that is simply to die for.
  • It’s keto, low carb, and even gluten free (provided all ingredients used are gluten-free, and there is zero cross-contamination, of course.)

Ingredients & Variations

CHEESE Mozzarella cheese melts into cream cheese as the base for the dough. For best results, shred a block of cheese by hand. Pre-shredded varieties have additives that make it harder for the cheese to melt.

FLOUR This recipe calls for almond flour, but coconut flour can be used. It’s not a 1:1 ratio, however. About a third of the amount of coconut flour is needed. Use more cheese if necessary and be sure the texture is firm and moldable.

YEAST Instant yeast gives the dough a bread-like consistency. That’s what makes this recipe so great, especially for those who crave that chewy texture!

How To Make Fathead Pizza Crust

  1. Melt cheeses in the microwave.
  2. Stir in dry ingredients, then add the egg. Form into a ball.
  3. Roll out dough, place on pizza pan and bake (as per recipe below)

Toppings For Fathead Pizza

For toppings, the sky’s the limit. Why not try a different variety of cheese on top, like Muenster, cheddar, or a mix of Monterey Jack and Provolone? Feta cheese with basil, roasted tomatoes, and a drizzle of olive oil is the best on a Greek pizza. Or try one with Slow Cooker Chicken Spaghetti Sauce or evenEasy Low Carb Meat Sauce. Pepperoni or other cured meats are delish or try some roasted red peppers, spinach & mushrooms for nutrition, and bleu cheese crumbles—it’s a vegetarian delight.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

  • If the dough is too sticky, add extra almond flour until it firms up, mixing thoroughly by hand until fully incorporated.
  • Sometimes the cheese doesn’t incorporate with the cream cheese correctly, especially if using pre-shredded varieties. Simply use an electric mixer and beat until smooth.

Can You Freeze Fathead Pizza Crust?

Absolutely! Roll the dough out between parchment (as per recipe below) then freeze between the layers in an airtight container. Bake from frozen for about 7-10 minutes, add toppings and continue baking until golden brown. Or defrost it in the refrigerator overnight, and bake as usual.

Introduction

As an expert and enthusiast, I can provide information on a wide range of topics, including the concept of Fathead Pizza and the ingredients used in its crust. I have access to a vast amount of information from various sources, which I can use to provide accurate and reliable answers to your questions.

Fathead Pizza Crust

Fathead pizza crust is a low-carb and keto-friendly alternative to traditional pizza dough. It gained popularity among those following a low-carb or ketogenic diet because it allows them to enjoy pizza without the use of flour. The secret ingredient in Fathead pizza crust is extra cheese, which gives it a deliciously cheesy flavor.

The main ingredients used in Fathead pizza crust are:

  1. Cheese: Mozzarella cheese is melted and combined with cream cheese to form the base of the dough. It is recommended to shred a block of cheese by hand for best results, as pre-shredded varieties may have additives that make it harder for the cheese to melt.

  2. Flour: Almond flour is used in this recipe, but coconut flour can also be used as an alternative. However, the ratio of coconut flour to almond flour is not 1:1. About a third of the amount of coconut flour is needed compared to almond flour. If using coconut flour, it is important to use more cheese if necessary and ensure that the texture of the dough is firm and moldable.

  3. Yeast: Instant yeast is added to the dough to give it a bread-like consistency. This is what makes the Fathead pizza crust recipe great, especially for those who crave a chewy texture.

Making Fathead Pizza Crust

To make Fathead pizza crust, follow these steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (218°C).
  2. Combine shredded mozzarella cheese and cream cheese in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until the cheese is smooth and melted.
  3. Stir in almond flour, salt, instant yeast, and garlic powder.
  4. Add a beaten egg to the bowl and knead it into a ball using your hands or a spatula.
  5. Place the dough between two pieces of parchment paper and roll it into a circle about 1/8" thick.
  6. Transfer the dough, still between the parchment paper, to a baking sheet. Remove the top layer of parchment paper.
  7. Prick the dough several times with a fork.
  8. Bake the dough for 7 minutes or until it is golden brown on the bottom and edges.
  9. Top the crust with your choice of pizza toppings.
  10. Bake the pizza for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

Toppings for Fathead Pizza

When it comes to toppings for Fathead pizza, the options are endless. You can get creative and use a variety of cheeses, such as Muenster, cheddar, or a mix of Monterey Jack and Provolone. Other topping ideas include feta cheese with basil, roasted tomatoes, and a drizzle of olive oil for a Greek pizza, or Slow Cooker Chicken Spaghetti Sauce or Easy Low Carb Meat Sauce for a flavorful twist. Vegetarian options can include toppings like roasted red peppers, spinach, mushrooms, and bleu cheese crumbles.

Conclusion

Fathead pizza crust is a popular choice for those following a low-carb or ketogenic diet. It uses a combination of cheese, almond flour, and yeast to create a delicious and satisfying pizza crust.
